Formed in 1984 by Maurice Starr who a few years earlier had discovered the band New Edition.
The group originally consisted of Donnie Wahlberg, Daniel Wood, Jamie Kelley and the brothers Jordan and Jonathan Knight.
In 1985, Jamie Kelly was sacked from the band due to heavy drinking and was replaced by Joseph McIntyre.
New Kids On The Block supported Tiffany on her tour in 1989 and soon had their first hit with "Please Don't Go Girl".
They soon became one of the most successful bands in the world, and were especially popular amongst teenage girls.
Their hits included "Step By Step", "Hangin Tough" and "Cover Girl".
In 1990, they won 5 awards at the Smash Hits poll winners party.
In 1994, they split-up on amicable terms.
Donnie Wahlberg went on to follow his brother Mark's career path and won several acting roles including the man who shot Bruce Willis at the start of "The Sixth Sense", and recently in the TV series "Boomtown".
Jordan Knight, Joe McIntyre and Danny Wood have all launched solo careers, but none have had the same success as NKOTB.
Joe McIntyre appeared on the BBC2 TV show "Never Mind The Buzzcocks". In 2002, he started acting in the drama series "Boston Public" playing a teacher.
Jon Knight appeared on the Oprah Winfrey show in 2001 and now works in real estate.
